'Is the risk worth it?'- Drug Action Week
It appeared normal, social and in these environments we are only introduced to the positive effects. We arn't exposed to people the next day coming 'down', trying to find another hit, struggling with rent we just saw a great time.
I count myself as being lucky, i never became addicted, never chased a hit and ensured I remained in control and justified my actions. After a few highs, accelerated lows and a heap of cash later we ponder , is it worth it? One bad trip later the answer was clear..h*ll no!
I had to get out. Not all of my crew have been as lucky. There is not one day in my life where I do not cross someone who is affected by drug use, not one. Be that friends, grief sticken families or someone I met on the street. I now spend my weekends volunteering as an outreach worker communicating with people at risk and under the influence. It's extremly challenging, influentual, heart breaking and ultimatly the most rewarding action I can be involved with.
The biggest risk with drugs is we don't know the consequences until it's too late. Will we become addicted? have an overdose? get caught up in violence, crime, assault? The truth is it is unknown.. the positive effects can last for hours, the negative a lifetime.Thirty seconds can change your life.
If you ever get caught in a situation involving drugs ask yourself, is the risk worth it?
