Keep the fun times fun at Schoolies!
As we come closer and closer to the conclusion of 2011, many of us are graduating from high school. The end of Year 12 is always a busy time that can bring both anxiety and excitement. There's exams, graduation, the final year 12 assembly, graduation dinners... A big part of the end of Year 12 is also Schoolies or Leavers (as they say in W.A). A time to throw aside your school uniform, forget about your books and have a good time with your mates.
Let’s face it – you’ve probably been planning celebrations for months. Correct? However, it’s really important to make sure that you party sensibly to avoid your weekend turning into a disaster, full of regrets. Rest assured, this blog hasn’t been written by some boring oldies wanting to ruin your fun; rather a couple of young peeps just like you, who have countless nightmarish Schoolies stories. Drunken hook-ups leading to heartbreak, ruined nights due to not knowing your limits, or late night Emergency Department visits – just a few situations you definitely want to avoid.
In all seriousness though, in an average week, four Australians under age 25 die due to alcohol-related injuries, and 70 will be hospitalised due to alcohol-caused assault. Add to that the effects of drug use and drink spiking, and the ramifications of dangerous risk-taking and unwanted sex, and it’s not hard to imagine how these nightmare stories come about. Celebrating the end of your schooling should be a positive experience, and one you want to remember for the right reasons.
This Monday on Getting Real in the Reach Out forums, we’ll be talking about how to have a safe night out, as well as sharing useful tips for enjoying Schoolies. Drop by if you’re heading away this year or in the years to come, or jump on and share your tips on safe partying: http://forums.reachout.com/showthread.php?1755-Schoolies-Leavers-and-partying-safe!-14th-Nov
