Mental Health Week 09
It may seem odd that there is a week dedicated to mental health, much in the same way there is a day dedicated to AIDS. What’s the point of it? Some say it’s like a slap in the face, if I have a mental illness, what does a mental health week or day really do for me?
The idea behind it must stem from the need to create awareness and education around the issue of mental health and wellbeing and encourage community and national participation in making a difference, somewhere, somehow.
This year, Mental Health Week will take place from the 4th to the 10th of October. Each state has their unique bunch of activities for the event, in the lead up to World Mental Health Day on the 10th October.
Check out your state mental health website to see what’s happening close to you and how you can get involved if you want to. QLD is running a campaign on the theme “Be active, get connected, stay involved.” NSW is working around: “Sign up, Link in, Get involved”, while VIC is asking the question “What do you know?”
So with all these things happening around Australia, it is hoped that the level of awareness around mental health and wellbeing issues will be raised. The week will foster open discussion of mental illnesses and insights into prevention and treatment services.
In the spirit of Mental Health week 2009, let’s have our say, our open discussion of mental illnesses and insights into the world of mental health as it affects us...

Reply ReportI agree it's a great idea!!!! Unless you experience it or know someone who lives with it, it's hard to understand and may not be aware about mental illness so this week gives us all a chance to learn about it, mental illness runs in my family and even I didn't know it was mental illness week, lol you learn something everyday!

Reply ReportI agree with Cassie mental health week is a great chance to help educate and reduce stigma that is usually associated with mental illness. I noticed in the papers that more people are speaking out about it which is a really good thing as it can help people realise that they are not alone in what they are going through or experiencing.

Reply ReportOh, didn't realise that this week is mental health week! I think it's a positive thing that they have awareness weeks, on issues such as mental health. It's be great to get more awareness and understanding of mental illnesses going on.
Will look into what activities are going on in my state for this week :)
