My experience as a ReachOut.com Community Builder
The ReachOut Community Builders (RO CommBs for short) are a group of people 18- 25 who help keep the ReachOut forums fun and safe. We also help lead healthy, insightful and fun discussions on a range of topics that affect each and every one of us. Our major goal is to help create a fun and positive community . Some of the more unique topics which have been led include: is emo music bad for your health?, sticking up for yourself, expressing yourself in creative ways and getting involved in your community. We've also led discussions surrounding topics such as: divorce, relationships, study tips and goal settings. We need to be creative to keep coming up with unique topics!
The experience of seeing a community share their insights and motivations towards positive change is extremely rewarding for everyone involved. We are actively involved in a community full of wonderful people who are already changing the world. We often see positive changes come about in the way of people taking charge of their own or a friend's mental health and wellbeing. Furthermore, we have an important role in making sure every person who logs on to the ReachOut forums know that they are important and can contribute something to our unique and active community. How could that NOT make you feel great about yourself???
For me being a commB for the past two years has allowed me to interact with a great bunch of people - including the other commBs, Reach Out crew members and of course the online community. I have made new friends and we always have heaps of fun at workshops and through online media when discussing new ideas. This role has also allowed me to use my creativity to keep people interested and I believe I am making a positive difference. I have also gained confidence and am now more likely to state my opinion. I have also gained initiative, people skills and problem solving skills through my involvement as a commB.
The role is heaps of fun and makes you feel empowered to be a young person in Australia today.
