Do you have protection?
I am pretty sure almost all of you (if not all!) have some cyber smarts and can handle yourself online in the face of danger.
But this isn’t the case for every young person out there and this week, National Cyber Security Awareness, highlights the risks that can be associated with using the internet and simple steps for those who feel unsure to protect themselves online.
There have been so many stories in the newspapers lately about cyber bullying and tragic ends and working with an internet based organization that uses every social media channel to reach young people in a positive way, it is saddening to read these and wonder… what went wrong?
So let’s take this week to raise awareness through our personal online networks, to all our friends and family who may not know some of the risks, about the importance of protecting yourself and your information online.
Let’s help them become cyber savvy (I’ll start with my mom… new to facebook and loving it! )
National Cyber Security Awareness Week 2010 is from 6 to 11 June and these are the steps being promoted:
- Install security software and update it regularly.
- Turn on automatic updates so that all your software receives the latest fixes.
- Get a stronger password and change it at least twice a year.
- Stop and think before you click on links or attachments.
- Stop and think before you share any personal or financial information? About yourself or your friends and family.
Around 140 partners will promote the messages of the Awareness Week through activities online and events in regional and metropolitan Australia.
Let’s do this too. How?
- Send this information through your networks
- Explain and help set up security settings for those around you who are not sure how to do it
- Tweet tweet tweet the message
- Post post post the message
You get the idea:)

Reply ReportGood points. My two cents. Also beware of who you are chatting to online. Remember they could be lying about many things including age and gender. Don't be flattered by the attention and sucked into providing pictures or engaging in sexually suggestive conversation! Age of consent in Australia is 16, or 18 for guys who are attracted to other guys. If you are over this age, the person you are talking to could well be younger than what they say they are - so just be careful :-)
