National Carers Week 2010
Carers Australia is this week holding National Carers Week to acknowledge the 2.6 million carers who provide support to family members or friends that have a disability, mental illness or disorder, are terminally ill or frail or suffer from a chronic condition.
All of this support is done unpaid. Carers Week, held from 17 – 23 October aims to provide the opportunities to celebrate family carers in communities, acknowledge their personal contributions as well as to generate discussion about issues that affect carers the most.
Some facts about Carers in Australia:
- 380,000 carers are under the age of 26
- 170,000 of these are under the age of 18
- Almost 1 million carers live outside major cities
- 78% of primary carers care for a person living in the same household
- 26% of primary carers care for a child.
