Staying safe while having fun
Exam time can bring out the worst in me – I am crabby, agitated and stressed beyond belief. At the end of the week I want to go out with my friends and have a few drinks. Drinking after exams is a common occurrence for Uni students; many see it as a way of de-stressing. Going out has its obvious perks but it is important to know how to keep yourself safe during these times.
Everyone deserves to reward themselves after they have accomplished something or worked hard in school. Some unwind by taking a relaxing bubble bath and others find going out to the pub as their source of relaxation. Taking the time for yourself is helpful in maintaining your mental health. When I want to relax and go out I make sure to remember to keep myself safe so that I can enjoy my time. Here are some of my tips on how to stay safe when going out:
- When I go out for the night I make sure to stick with a friend. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where you are alone in an area you are unfamiliar with. My good friend and I have a signal we give each other when we feel uncomfortable or need to be rescued at a party. It’s important to talk with your friends beforehand about what you are comfortable with and what you aren’t.
- If I am ever in a situation where I feel I should leave the party I make sure to ask someone to leave with me, walking home alone could cause more danger to you. I keep a cab service phone number in my phone in case of emergency. It’s better to pay the extra money and get home safe then risk getting in more trouble. If you don’t know the area you could find yourself getting lost and in a worse situation.
- Drinking can be fun and enjoyable if you know your limits. I am cautious about drinking at parties because of the risk of drink spiking. I keep my glass in my hand at all times and I never accept open beverages. If you think your drink has been spiked talk to a friend immediately and have someone assist you in getting out of the situation.
