Why should we care about the Census?
So, coming up on the 9th August is Census night. “And this matters why?” I hear you saying… Just wait, wait! Let me explain. As a background, the Census provides a 'snapshot' of Australia every five years - it provides important information to help plan for the future by capturing vital information on the social, economic and housing characteristics of Australian society.
Traditionally, young people are among the hardest groups of people to accurately measure, because we move around a lot for one. But participating in the census ensures that we actually have a voice in our own future; it ensures that governments, decision makers and the wider community know our needs and interests.
Not only that, but the need for things like health clinics, youth centres, sport and recreation facilities, libraries and even festivals and events can be determined using Census data – so it starts to become clear why it’s important that all young Australians participate - we want more of all of those things!
To make it easier, you can now complete the census online too. So if you’re not going to be home on Census night, make sure you head here http://abs.gov.au/Census and make sure you’re counted, literally!
To finish off, here’s some census nerd trivia: Did you know that Jedi Knight is not the only creative response to the religion question in the #AusCensus? Moroccan Chicken has also been received ;)
