Hey hey everyone!!!

This Tuesday (13 October) Mim from Inspire Digital and I will be hosting a discussion about body image and eating issues and, importantly, what we can do to prevent eating disorders in young people.

The conversation is part of the National Eating Disorders Collaboration Youth Consultation which has been funded by the Australian Government.

The results of the consultation will be used to shape recommendations to the government on how we can best prevent and treat eating disorders in young people.

We want to make sure that the views and experiences of a whole bunch of young people shape the recommendations so......come and join us this Tuesday night!!! Yay!!!

 Time: 7pm and 8:30pm (AEDT)
 When: Tuesday, 13 October.
Who:  YOU! :) and tell your friends to come too!

In the meantime, if you’ve got 15 minutes to spare it’d be great if you could do the National Eating Disorders Collaboration Youth Consultation Survey! Follow this link.

Thank you!!!! :)

Hi everyone  — welcome!

This discussion is part of a national youth consultation which has been funded by the Australian Government, under the banner of the National Eating Disorders Collaboration.

The aim of the consultation is to:

  • find out what you think about body image and eating issues
  • get your ideas and suggestions on what strategies and messages might work to prevent eating disorders in young people.

The content of tonight’s discussion will be used to shape recommendations to the government on how we can best prevent and treat eating disorders in young people.

Tonight will be a kind of structured conversation — we’ve got a few key questions to guide our discussion.

Remember if this issue is affecting you or anyone you know check out  Reach Out! And if you need help now call:

  • Kids Helpline on 1800 55 1800 (free call from landline)
  • Lifeline on 13 11 14 (cost of local call from landline)

Ok so the first question for this evening is....

Thinking about you and your friends, what are the key things that impact or influence your body image and eating habits?

Hiya all!

So some of the key things that I know impact or influence body image and eating habits on myself and friends is things like media, pressure from both family and friends...

I also know in my case with eating habits it comes down to what I can actually afford... some weeks I won't be able to eat much at all because I just can't afford food... So I think money is a huge issue when it comes to eating habits...

A minority of young people, like young teens - teeny-boppers who say: Aww I wish I had a body like .... "Britney Spears"! Media AT times can influence people to be skinny, but than again, it's mentally.

Hi Char, Jen-Jen and Ophelia (and anyone else out there). Thanks for joining us tonight.

So in terms of the media, what in particular about it influences how you and your friends eat and feel about your bodies?

Same for friends and family. Is it things they say and do?

OKay so with me (and I'm in recover from an ED, so my response will be different to those who aren't) - key things which impact my food choices are;  having to maintain my weight within a certain weight range, having to maintain adequate nutrition levels for blood tests, what's written on my meal plan by my dietician, what I can afford (ie. bananas are on sale? apples are not? It's going to be a week of bananas) and what's easy - I'm pretty time-poor so I'm not going to stand around my kitchen for 3 hours making a risotto when I could have frozen fish in 20 minutes.

My friends? They're possibly the healthiest eaters I know - most eat what they can afford, what will nourish them best and what they *like* to eat.

As for body image - I think our past experiences and our perception of what other people think of us can impact our body image. I think media has an impact to, as does the sexualisation of (particularly) women and children. But I think it's insulting to say that "magazines cause anorexia" - because that's putting a very complex mental illness down to a very simple thing.
