I think I am pregnant

How to tell if you are pregnant

Figuring out if you are pregnant is not always an easy thing to do. If you are not planning a pregnancy you may be worried and scared. These feelings are normal.

When you are pregnant the following things may happen:

  • you miss a period
  • you are tired and don't have much energy
  • you may vomit
  • you may have food cravings
  • you need to urinate more than usual
  • you have tender or swollen breasts.

It is important to remember that having one or more of these signs does not necessarily mean you are pregnant. There may be other reasons why you are experiencing these things.

If you think you have one or more of these signs it may be helpful to go and see your local doctor. Check out the Who can help you section for more information about how they can help you.

What can you do if you think you are pregnant?

Taking the step to test if you are pregnant may be difficult. However, knowing the answer may allow you to move forward in deciding what to do next. Having support from a friend or someone you trust may be helpful while you are working out if you are pregnant.

Home pregnancy test

Home pregnancy tests are available from most chemists. Home pregnancy tests are not 100% accurate so it is a good idea to go and see your local doctor if you are still unsure. A positive result is more likely to be correct than a negative one.

Seeing your local doctor or family planning centre/clinic

Your local doctor or a family planning centre/clinic will be able to let you know if you are pregnant. They also are able to talk to you about the best ways to look after yourself during the pregnancy.

If you are unsure about what to do if you are pregnant they may also be helpful people to talk to about your options. Your local phone book or yellow pages should list the doctors and family planning centre/clinic in your area.

Hi Rhe Ranon: as this has been going on for two months already, it's time that you go talk to a GP now. You could also get a pregnancy test from a chemist, or even some supermarkets these days - but even if it is negative you should probably talk to a doctor about the changes to your period. Remember you can always ask to talk to female doctor if you prefer or look up he women's health centre closest to you. You can also talk to a GP or a registered nurse on the phone 24 hours a day at Health Direct 1800 022 222. Good luck!

I normally have heavy periods that last 5 days.. Im worried that I could be pregnant.. I've had a few symptoms such as breast changes, peeing more, feeling nauseous and my smell has changed..

Hi there missmaree,

It is normal to feel scared and overwhelmed if you think you may be pregnant, especially if the pregnancy was unplanned.  The best thing to do is visit your local GP.  There are lot's of differnt symptoms for pregnancy and having one or more of these does not definitely mean you are pregnant.  The only way to find this out for sure is to get a test done by your doctor.   If you are pregnant you GP will also be able to talk you through your options  and advise you on the best way to stay healthy.

Check out this fact sheet with heaps of handy info on going to see your GP: http://au.reachout.com/find/articles/local-doctor-or-general-practitioner-gp

If you are pregnant then it is really important that you speak to somebody about it.  Speaking to someone will help you organise your thoughts, get things into perspective and release tension.  A professional will be able to help you work through your options so that you   can come up with strategies to cope with the emotions that being pregnant may bring up.

GPs and school counsellors are a great place to start because they are trained to deal with a wide range of issues.  they can give you advise and refer you on to services in your local area that will be able to help you.  Here is a fact sheet with loads of info about school counsellors: http://au.reachout.com/find/articles/school-counsellors

If you don't feel up to speaking to someone face to face why not give Kids help line a try on 1800 55 1800.  They are really friendly and 100% confidential and anonymous.  You can call any time of the night or day free from land line or pay phone and they will listen to you and understand what you are going through.

Another really great option is free web and email counselling.  These services are  also completely confidential and anonymous and super friendly too.  You can check them out at these links: http://www.lifeline.org.au/Find-Help...t/default.aspxhttps://www.eheadspace.org.au/.

If you discover you are pregnant there is heaps of information to help you in this section of our site: http://au.reachout.com/find/issues/sex-pregnancy/pregnancy?kt=info,  You may also want to check out these stories written by other young women about discovering that they were pregnant, deciding on what to do and what helped them get through to live happy lives: http://au.reachout.com/find/issues/sex-pregnancy/pregnancy?kt=stories

We promise you are not alone in this - you just need to connect with someone who will listen to you and help you with everything you are going through.

Take Care
