Introducing Reach Out Central: The game
Reach Out Central (ROC) is an online game designed to help you learn and improve skills for life such as communication, problem solving and optimistic thinking online in a virtual setting using real life scenarios.
Playing ROC allows you to test drive real-life scenarios and situations and see how your thoughts, feelings and actions can impact on your relationships and your mood.
You take on the role of a character that is new in town. It is up to you to work out how to settle in, make new friends and find your way around the place. What you discover is that the choices you make about friends, partying, work and life can impact on your wellbeing and relationships.
The purpose of the storylines are to present real life scenarios that allow you to make choices online, see the consequences of your choice and learn from those choices. You are also able to monitor the impact that a poor choice has on your in-game mood or relationships with other characters in the game.
Throughout the game, comments from a narrator appear to question your decisions, provide advice and encouragement or link you to fact sheets on Reach Out that might be relevant or useful in the game play. A major aim of ROC is for you to transfer the knowledge and skills you gain online from the game into your lives off line.
To start playing ROC you need to register through a simple online form on the game's home page at www.reachoutcentral.com.au.
When you enter the game you have the option to complete a short mood and feeling questionnaire at the start of the game and each time you log in. This data is saved to your member profile and is a way to track your real-life mood over time.
Your in-game mood is tracked and during the game a mood monitor captures your character's mood based on the decisions that you make and the activities you participate in. It is represented by a small animation in the top left hand corner of the screen. By clicking on the arrow, you can view a breakdown of the mood along a continuum of four mood scales (e.g. sad - happy, stressed - relaxed, tired - energetic, scared - confident).
There are no right or wrong answers in ROC. The directions and outcomes are determined by you. This means you will be able to experiment with choices in a safe environment to see how your decisions and interactions affect your character's mood and other characters' wellbeing in the ROC game, without any direct impact on your health and wellbeing.
Their mood will influence the type of interactions you will have with the other characters and will change your experience of the game.
Your ROC member page can be accessed through clicking on the 'member page' button next to the ROC logo in the bottom left hand corner. The member page is where you can view your mood tracker responses in a graph over time, a list of links to fact sheets you've picked up while playing ROC, as well as their current in-game mood.

Reply ReportHey all
Firstly - I'm so sorry about all the difficulties. I know how frustrating it is.
Can you tell me exactly where in the log on process you're having problems? Definitely email and I'll make sure I get the techies onto it as soon as humanly possible (if not sooner!).
Thanks so much for your patience.

Reply ReportHi Marianne, I have a problem with the game. Just recently, for the past two days i can log into the game but i cant go anywhere but 'my house'. I don't have any emails, have not seen any of the people, all i can do is all the stuff around the house, like eat, sleep, watch TV. In the objectives it says i am to find 'mias??' bag but i cant do that if the only place i can go is home, and when no people are to be found. . . . Please help i am loving the game but i am frustrated that i cant go any further and do anything

Reply ReportHi Marianne, I've had the same issue as a few other people. Basically, I can log in, but can't go anywhere else except the house. My last conversation was with the "mother" about the separation. The last objective I had/have is "Find Mia's bag" which I haven't been able to do at all...if it helps, I'm running the game off of Safari.

Reply ReportHi Marianne, i am officially over waiting for your help to use your game, quite franlkly i think it is extremely rude. I have been waiting over 8 months and my patience has worn extremely thin. Their is obviously a few people experiencing the same issue yet you have not replied once to thier calls. I will no longer be visiting this site.

Firstly - I'm so sorry for not getting back to you sooner. We don't get automatically notified when someone comments which is very annoying. I also don't work on the day to day running of the RO site so don't keep track of comments.
But it's absolutely not any excuse. You are totally justified to feel frustrated and angry. I hope you can forgive me and not hold my behaviour against the whole RO service.
.
The problems with ROC are generally due to problems with the game game logic - there are so many dependency and pre-requisite settings in the game engine which means that if one tiny field is set incorrectly it have a flow on effect to the whole game. We do comprehensive testing, but sometimes things are missed.
So trying to find where the problem is it like finding a needle in a very big haystack - it takes a lot of time and resources. And unfortunately, I've had to concentrate on launching another service for young people.
I can tell you that we are committed to finding a quicker and better way of responding and fixing problems - so this doesn't happen again.
