Remember to take care of yourself as well

heads_swirling

It can be pretty stressful when you are trying to help a friend or family member through a tough time, let alone look after yourself and your stuff at the same time. After hearing about their concerns it is not uncommon to feel shock, sad, scared or overwhelmed.

Looking after yourself is even more important than important helping out others - because how much help can you be if you're not OK yourself? It's common to feel guilty by putting yourself first - but it's really the best way to ensure that you and your friend get the best care.

Therefore - it's the best idea to make sure you take time out to get the support you need.

Talk to someone you trust

Sometimes, if you have had a similar experience to the friend or family member you are helping, it may bring up feelings for you. Or it may be that seeing your friend or family member upset may also upset you. It may help to talk to others about how you feel and get support for yourself from someone outside the situation.

You may want to talk to another friend, family member, counsellor or teacher.

Lifeline and Kids Helpline provide 24/7 telephone counselling which may also be helpful if you'd like to talk through your situation with someone and get some support. Check out the links for more info.

Check out the Who can help you section for more information about how these people can help.

Take time out

It may be helpful to take some time to chill out. You may want to:

  • hang out with other friends
  • go for a walk or run
  • listen to music
  • watch some TV.

Check out the fact sheets on relaxation or coping with a stressful event for more information. And the ones that are listed on the left hand side of this page.

You will be better able to help your friends and family more if you are feeling supported yourself.

The only way to get help is to verbally talk about it or write it.
