Vaginal ring (nuva ring)
What is the vaginal ring (nuva ring)?
The vaginal ring (brand name, Nuva ring) is a soft plastic ring that you insert into the vagina once a month. It is then left in place for 3 weeks and taken out for a week. Once inserted the ring releases two artificial hormones (oestrogen and progestogen) which prevent pregnancy. The hormones are the same as those used in the Pill, but at a lower dose.
How does it work?
The ring works by:
- Stopping the release of an egg by the ovary
- Making the mucus at the opening of the uterus thicker so sperm can’t get through
- Changing the lining of the uterus so a fertilised egg can’t take hold
How do I get it?
You can get a prescription for the Nuva ring from your doctor or local family planning clinic.
The upside
- The ring is a very effective method of contraception if used correctly (99%).
- It usually improves acne
- Contains a lower dose of hormones than the pill, so has fewer side effects
- It lasts for 3 weeks at a time
- Periods become regular, shorter, lighter and less painful
The downside
- Side effects similar to other hormonal contraceptives including headaches, changes in bleeding patterns, sore breasts, mood changes and nausea.
- Not suitable for women over 35 who smoke, some women with certain types of migraines, diabetes or liver disease. May not be suitable for women who are breastfeeding.
- Only lasts 4 months after you get it from the pharmacy
- Have to remember to remove it after 3 weeks
