Reaching Out to the Minister

We got together with young people and Mark Butler at the Brain and Mind Research Institute in Sydney for a consultation to talk about mental health and young people. We used the ReachOut.com forums to allow young people around Australia the opportunity to participate and contribute to the real life session, as it happened.

The youth consultation formed part of a broader consultation with organisations and individuals all over Australia, which contributed to the new mental health package that was announced as a part of the 2011 Federal Budget. The budget included significant increases in mental spending, particularly in areas that affect young people, including:

  • More funding to increase the amount of Headspace youth mental health centres available around Australia
  • Funding to provide up to 12 Early Psychosis and Prevention and Intervention Centres
  • An additional 40 Family Mental Health Support Services over 5 years.
