A Day in the Life: Social Anxiety https://au.reachout.com/articles/a-day-in-the-life-social-anxiety (Intro Music) Jack: Hi there, it’s Jack from www.Reachout.com. Today we’re meeting Harris. He’s 18 and just about to start uni. For most people, this is a pretty exciting time, but for Harris who suffers from social anxiety, it's anything but. Social anxiety is one of the most common anxiety disorders that affect young people in Australia. Going to a party, speaking in a room full of people or even making a phone call can be terrifying for someone with social anxiety. We'll get a little bit of an insight into what triggers social anxiety for Harris and what can be done if you find yourself in a social situation that’s making you feel awkward and stressed out. (Music stops, footsteps and nature sounds play in the background) Harris: (to himself): Okay, all I need to do is get to the student center, sort my papers out, and I'm done. Easy. Cool. I can do this (door opens and shuts, chattering in background). Harris: (out loud): Excuse me, is this the student center? Receptionist: No, this is administration. You want the last building in the north block, that one out there next to this building (phone starts ringing loudly). Receptionist: You go out this door, to the left, then take the second right and it’s just past the quadrangle. Harris: Uh, okay... Receptionist: Oh, excuse me (picks up telephone and starts talking in background). Harris (to himself): Oh God, I have no idea where I’m going (door opens and shuts). Harris: I’m not going to be able to sign in, I’m probably going to miss the registration cut off. Male voice (in background): Hey, excuse me! Yeah, you! Hey, hey! Harris (to himself): Oh god, don’t come over here, don’t come over here, please don’t come over here. Male voice: Welcome to campus, I’m Lee. Harris: Ummmm, hi… I’m Harris. Lee: Hey Harris, have you heard of uni socials before? Harris: Ummmm no, I’m… I’m not… Lee: We’re the biggest society on campus. We hold regular events, meetups, pub nights... (carries on in background) Harris (to himself): God, please stop talking to me. Just… just let me go. Let me go... and stop talking. Lee (continuing): …and the best part is, there’s no fees. All you have to do is sign up. Harris (nervously): Oh, ummm... Yup. Okay. Thanks. Lee: Great, so here’s a goodie bag for you and don’t forget to head over there to our photo booth and then use our hashtag. Harris: Uhh, I… Uhhh sorry, I don’t take photos. Thanks. Sorry (footsteps). Harris (to himself): I don’t take photos, oh my god I’m such an idiot (sighs). I’m gonna hate this uni, I can tell. I’m not gonna speak to anyone, I’m going to be eating my lunch everyday by myself in this bloody quadrangle (takes a deep breath). Okay, uhhh... let’s just find the student center and get the hell out of here. Female voice: Hey, you should think about joining campus radio Another female voice: Hi, my name’s Rebecca. Would you like to join the drama society. (Many other voices join in over the top of each other, all asking similar questions as a heartbeat sound grows louder and more rapid until the sounds are overwhelming and everything becomes muted and dull. Then, a door opens and shuts) Harris (to himself): Breathe, breathe, just breathe! Okay, what the hell did Dr. Lenny say? Doctor Lenny (in Harris’ thoughts): So Harris, whenever you’re feeling anxious, and I know it can be hard to stay present, but just try and let yourself breathe. Take the time to breathe in for four seconds, hold for two and then breathe out for six. 4 - 2 - 6. Can you remember that? Keep a straight back while you’re breathing and you’ll soon notice your heart rate steadying and your stress levels decreasing. Harris (to himself): Okay, breathe (sighs). Inhale for four (takes a deep breath). Hold for two (pauses). Out for six (breathes out). 4 - 2 - 6. (Rapid heart beat quietens and slows down) It’s okay, I’m okay. (heartbeat fades out). Okay. Cool. I can do this! (Door opens and shuts, nature sounds in background) Lee: Hey, it’s you again, right? Harris? Harris: Lee. Lee: So did you find everything you needed? This place can be pretty overwhelming at first. It even took me a few weeks to work out where everything was. Harris: I... Actually, I really need to get to the student center. Lee: Oh no way, I’m actually heading over there now myself. I can show you if you like. Harris: Yeah. Really? Ummm... Yes, that would be great! Lee: Too easy! And you know, if you’re not doing anything later, the student union’s putting on free drinks at the campus bar. There’s some really good o-week crew going along, but you know, there’s no pressure if you’re too busy. Harris: Uhhh… yeah, maybe. That… that could be good, I’ll see how I go. Lee: Yeah, no worries. Just follow me. (Music starts playing) Jack: Thanks for listening to our podcast. To get more info on tough times and wellbeing, be sure to head to www.Reachout.com.
