Garigarra Mundine is an Aboriginal woman from Dubbo, NSW. She is Wiradjuri and Kamilaroi on her mother’s side, and Bundjulung and Yuin on her father’s. She shares her story of comparing her body to her friends’, wanting to fit in and her experience of living with an eating disorder. She started to get better by trying to find things that were healthy for her, getting support from her sister and talking to friends who were dealing with similar issues.
I've learnt from my experience that it's a journey, and it's not going to happen overnight.
This video is part of Butterfly Foundation’s campaign #EveryBODYisDeadly, which aims to encourage Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to talk about body image and eating concerns, and reach out to Butterfly for culturally safe support. The Butterfly National Helpline is free, confidential, open seven days a week, 8am-midnight AEST, and can be reached on 1800 33 4673 or via webchat.
