So, when a celeb speaks up about their struggles with mental health problems or they face those problems in public, it gets a lot of attention. This can bring much-needed awareness to an important issue, but it can also leave you feeling worried, sad and confused. Here are 5 tips for looking after yourself and those around you when a celeb’s mental health problems are being plastered all over the internet.

1. Imagine how they’re feeling

When a celeb’s problems are being shared as memes and gifs, it can be easy to forget that they’re people too. Before you hit share, take a moment to consider what might be going on for them and how the news might affect other people who are going through similar problems.

Celeb goss stories and nasty Reddit threads can be pretty dramatic and downright frightening. Instead of falling down an internet rabbit hole, seek out information about mental health from reliable sources. Learning about the causes, symptoms and possible treatments of a mental health problem can make it seem a lot less scary.

3. Think about the good stuff

It’s important to remember that people (including celebs) are more than their mental health problems. Try to think about their talents, achievements, strengths and generosity. Importantly, try to think about how much help is available.

4. Check in on yourself

Sometimes it feels like you know a celeb so well, you’re mates with them. So, it can be pretty upsetting to see them go through a tough time.
