Confidence is a really personal thing that isn’t the same for everyone. Different people have different levels of confidence, but there are some signs of a confident person which can give insight into where confidence comes from. Even if you’re not naturally confident, there are a number of ways you can build on your confidence over time.

Why are some people more confident than others?

Confidence is a pretty broad term and can be difficult to define as it’s so personal. Most people see confidence as having a belief in yourself, another person or an idea. When a person is confident, they are showing that they have faith in their talents, abilities and personal strength.

Having confidence can have a really positive impact on your day to day life, as well as your ability to achieve the things you want to do. The cool thing about confidence is that there is no official measure of a person’s confidence; if you feel confident then you probably are.

Confidence has a lot to do with self-esteem; therefore people with high self-esteem tend to be more confident. However, just because you’re not confident right now, doesn’t mean you can’t be more confident in the future.

What are some signs of a confident person?

Though confidence is such a personal thing, there are certain things that confident people tend to do. These qualities and behaviours can be a result of higher self-esteem but also just the ability to accept recognition.

Some examples include:

  • Doing what they believe to be right, even if it’s unpopular
  • Being willing to take risks
  • Admitting to mistakes and learning from them
  • Accepting compliments
  • Optimistic

How to become more confident

There are a number of things you can do to work on building your self-confidence. These include both practical tools you can use every day to work on your confidence, but also seeking help from others.

Sometimes low self-confidence can just be a learned behaviour, but other times it can stem from some personal experience that has made a person low in self-esteem. Sometimes it can be worth talking to a professional about reasons you might be lacking confidence to get some more in depth strategies.
